A Journey Defined by Struggle and Growth
David Coast’s story begins in Nigeria, where he faced the hardships of growing up in a single-parent household. “It was like playing life on hard mode,” he recalls. Moving frequently, often staying with extended family, his mother sacrificed everything to provide him with an education. Boarding school at ten years old forced him to mature quickly, learning independence and self-reliance from an early age.
The challenges didn’t stop there. Coast moved alone to Ghana for college—a journey that tested his resilience in new ways. Navigating life in a foreign country prepared him for an even bigger shift: moving to the United States. The transition was a culture shock, one that introduced him to the realities of being Black in America. “Like Chimamanda describes in Americanah, ‘When you make the choice to come to America, you become Black.’”
Arriving in the U.S. was a new beginning but not an easy one. As he was adjusting, tragedy struck—he lost his best friend just months before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The weight of grief and isolation led him into a deep depression, but music became his refuge. His guitar, his lyrics, and his passion for storytelling carried him through the darkest moments.
A Mother’s Influence and the Strength of an Immigrant’s Journey
When asked about the biggest influence on his life, Coast credits his mother. “She never let our struggles define us,” he says. Her resilience, determination, and unwavering support instilled in him a mindset of perseverance. The challenges of immigrating alone, starting over, and constantly stepping into the unknown shaped him into the artist he is today.
These experiences breathe life into his music. Every note, every lyric tells a story of embracing change, pushing forward, and believing in oneself against all odds. His songs are not just melodies but messages of hope, strength, and relentless ambition.

He prioritizes balance—working out, spending time in nature, and surrounding himself with inspiring people. “Motivation comes from small wins,” he explains. “Every bit of progress keeps me moving forward.”
Words of Wisdom to His Younger Self
If he could speak to his younger self, Coast would tell him: Follow your passion, not expectations. “Spend more time doing what sets your soul on fire. Ignore the distractions, the time-wasters. Stay focused, trust the process, and savor the moments.”
He believes in the power of persistence, urging others to embrace setbacks as part of the journey. “Life gets complicated, but every challenge shapes you. Keep pushing, stay consistent, and never lose sight of who you are.”
The Biggest Sacrifice: Time Away from Loved Ones
The road to success has demanded sacrifices. Being sent to boarding school at ten, moving to Ghana, and eventually the U.S. meant leaving behind family, friends, and familiarity. “It’s like life keeps moving while you’re grinding. Birthdays, celebrations, even the little everyday moments slip away.”
Perhaps the hardest part was losing his best friend before the pandemic. The isolation of a new country, coupled with grief, was overwhelming. But in his darkest moments, music became his lifeline.

Inspiration Beyond Music
Coast finds inspiration in nature, culture, and life itself. Whether hiking, playing soccer, or engaging in deep conversations, he believes creativity exists all around us. He also trains in Muay Thai, wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu—physical outlets that help him stay centered.
“Beyond music, I love great conversations, good food, and moments of stillness to reflect,” he shares. “Taking time for myself allows me to recharge and stay motivated.”
